How to build my sign

SEE BELOW FOR TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR SIGN.

Prepare your parts

SEALING YOUR PIECES - OPTIONAL

  • We highly recommend that you seal your pieces if you plan to paint or spray paint your sign. You can use slightly watered down white glue for a simple DIY sealer or you can use any other standard acrylic clear coat.

SAND YOUR PIECES

  • We recommend you sand all of your pieces. If you clear coat your pieces, sand them after. Sand them all using the included sand paper. If you use your own, use a grit between 220-400 grit. This will ensure you remove loose wood fibers.

PAINT OR COLOUR?

Now that your pieces are prepared you’re ready to be creative!

MARKERS

  • If this is just a quick fun craft project, you can use any kind of basic marker. Take your time and do straight lines going with the grain to get the best coverage.

ACRYLIC CRAFT PAINT

  • We recommend using foam sponge brushes to gently apply light layers of paint. Use a brush for smaller parts. Take the time to do at least two coats for darker colours. Lighter colours might take three or four to achieve full coverage.
  • Lightly sand in between coats if you see imperfections or bumps.

PAINT MARKERS

  • We recommend using acrylic paint markers. POSCA works the best. You may still need to do two coats. Allow drying time between coats.

SPRAY PAINT

  • We recommend that this be done in a well ventilated area.
  • Applying a white primer coat to all parts will help achieve a smooth surface for spray paints. We recommend that you lightly sand all parts after priming and between spray paint coats.

FINISHING YOUR PROJECT

ASSEMBLY

  • When you are satisfied with your parts you are ready to glue the sign together. We strongly recommend using wood glue or white glue. These glues are more forgiving should you need to move a piece or take one out.

WARNING!!!

  • If you choose to use super glue, use a THICK or Gel Super glue. Be cautious of parts with thin walls that can flex out of shape. You may not be able fit the interior pieces afterwards.

FINAL TOUCHES

  • Spray your sign with a final protective clear coat.
  • Add a picture hanger on the back or use 3M adhesive strips for mounting the sign.
